The opportunity to compose the soundtrack for William Shatner’s “The Captains” came my way as a result of my long association with Avery Brooks. I have had the pleasure of knowing and performing with Avery for many years. When he broached the subject of my scoring the film, I was instantly intrigued, never revealing I’d been a Star Trek fan since I was a teenager. Over the years, I had composed music inspired by Star Trek characters and used episodes for song titles. This, however, would be something different. Acting as the third voice between William Shatner and the five actors who succeeded him as captains, seemed potentially alien and, at the same time, familiar.Fast forward to the point when Avery Brooks and William Shatner first shared their idea for how the music would interact with the film. I suppose the words that came to my mind were, “Seriously? ☺⚠⚡★!, no problem.” It would be a series of spontaneous relationships, framed by bookends of linguistic cadence, contrast and subtle references to the history of music within the Star Trek universe. To that spontaneous end, I decided to include dialog from the film for six of the pieces, which I felt produced a particularly musical outcome.

Given my Star Trek history, naming the compositions after episode titles seemed fitting as well, providing an opportunity to discover points of synergy. My new association with William Shatner will continue with additional episodes, but in the mean time, thanks for listening. Enjoy.
