Solo Piano

Originally from Canada, pianist/composer Andy Milne has been New York-based since the early 1990s. Performing extensively with Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson, Ravi Coltrane and Ralph Alessi, Milne went on to lead his own quintet Dapp Theory. In the mid-90s Milne began playing more solo piano, which in 1997 resulted in the concurrent release of two piano records. Dreams and False Alarms [Songlines] contains deeply considered re-workings of long-remembered pop/rock/folk/reggae classics, reaffirming and expanding Milne’s creative process as a jazz improviser. Scenarios [Obliqsound] showcases an intimate duo with harmonica virtuoso Grégoire Maret, presenting a more textural, almost cinematic series of encounters.

In 2011 Milne embarked on a prolific journey, scoring seven films for actor/director William Shatner. The soundtrack for The Captains features several emotive solo piano improvisations that serve as the third voice to the on-screen conversations. Milne continues to explore duo and solo piano-based projects, revealing complementary expressions of his questing musical personality. He performs frequently in duo with Steely Dan vocalist La Tanya Hall and created the arrangements for her show The Singular Sarah Vaughan: A Portrait In Song. Milne cites a long list of keyboard heroes and mentors, from Art Tatum to Stevie Wonder. He brings to his work a social and artistic idealism, influenced both by his choice of music and its interpretation.
